Reading through C.L. Moore's "Jirel of Joiry" and tried to tackle the titular character as well as touching up the Sword and Sorcery sorceress

Magical Things: Creative Platypus

A cairdroia and a sorceress You may recognize the cairdroia from the movie Night House. The sorceress is in honor of all things sword and sorcery as I catch up on some C.L. Moore.

Platypus Thoughts

The best casual reading right now are the Hunger Games quartet and The Lord of the Rings.  I began a new novel about vampire prostitutes following a bet with the padre and his wife. It takes place in a New England college town and features a vampire, a ghost, a stryga, and Madame Stryx. There's also a Greek priest, some Ukrainians, and a few Russian, grad students and a callow professor of Classics. Trust me to ruin a good idea, right? Elder gods in the background. No Cthulhu.

Platypus Full Circle: The Platypus Reads CCCXXXI

Today I finished reading the Agamemnon in Greek, 23 years after first reading it in Fagles' stirring translation. "Sing the song of woe, but may the good prevail."

Stalin 40k

Thought for the day: Beneath its medieval and classical trappings, Warhammer 40k is really the impact of two World Wars on continental Europe. The vocab of Rhinos and Commissars is pulled directly, but the lack of significant air power, massed infantry supported by tanks and motorcycles, the SS like knightly orders of Space Marines, the emphasis on city fighting, and the mandate to smite "the mutant, the heretic, and the xeno" are all straight from the Eastern Front.
